Welcome to the Oxford Bar, or ‘a Scout hut for the over 30’s’ as some people like to describe the establishment.

Don’t be put off by the less than salubrious exterior of the place, you can’t judge a book by its cover....as they say, whoever ‘they’ are...but in this case ‘they’ are correct , come inside and enter the most talked about pub in Young Street............

As you can see we have a well stocked gantry, and our bar staff are here to satisfy your every need (even Malibu). We sell a wide range of Malt whiskies (Glen Ord is regularly on offer, however there are sadly few takers).

If you look closely at the far end of the Bar you will see the world famous Oxford Bar pie machine, built circa 1950, it's a veritable heirloom to the regulars. Stocked with the infamous ‘Falkirk’ Pies, Bridies and Sausage Rolls, it really comes into its own on Rugby International occasions. A glance round the bar at the regulars will tell you its regularly called into use....!!

The Bar has its own geography, as you walk in, to your far left is the area known as ‘dead man’s corner’, it's the space below the Expelair fan which quietly removes any stale smoke and unfresh air. Closer to the door from the corner going East is what is commonly known as ‘The Visitors paddock’, and this is the area where most first time visitors will choose to stand and take in the ambience, listen to the crack etc...From the door to the bottom of the step is the area known as ‘Gates’ enclosure’....this is where the serious work goes on, the owner and most of the regulars will congregate here to while away the time discussing the major issues of the day and having the odd lager or two.........‘Davey’s  Steps’ lead up to the ‘Carousel Lounge’ which has been recently re-inforced to cope with the Friday night crew. (Think of the Samoan Front Row, double it, and picture them squashed in a phone box, and your almost at the equivalent).

This is the ‘Back Room Left’, yes indeed, there is a lounge bar as well. Much favoured by the ladies and the professional classes or ‘suits’ as they are otherwise known. You will probably recognise this area from ‘The Munro Show’, this is where Muriel Gray sat and tried to convince you all that she was in a real Highland hideaway somewhere near Ross and Cromarty, when in fact she was sitting in the back room getting feisty with the regulars.

This is also the area much favoured by the plethora of journalists and photographers coming in for their Rebus fix.

The other end of the back room, now this has seem some action in its day, one of the few places in the bar where you can be spotted from the street (note absence of regulars from this area). Home from Home to a noteworthy journalist of an Irish persuasion, this area normally hosts the ‘Winter Games’ i.e. when the regulars venture through to play dominoes. This area has hosted such luminaries as Ian ‘the bear’ Milne and John 'the white shark’ Jeffries, Denis Waterman and the sadly missed John Toye (see separate ‘Visitors’ page - coming soon) and a host of other ‘celebs’ who have graced the bar.

A quiet place to read the paper, or a raucous place to hold your ‘hen’ night, it can be something different for everyone (even a place to lay your weary head and have a ‘kip’ if you feel the urge).......and home to some of the wierdest furniture you will see anywhere in Scotland, there are rumours that the chairs were donated from one of Edinburghs Theatres after a Christmas showing of Snowhite and the Seven Dwarfs.....come in and you will see what I mean.
